$critter cocks $pp head, glancing back at $pp wings, and summons the nerve to leap. $ppc little wings beat furiously, slowing what would otherwise be a plummeting fall, and you're able to guide $ps down to a safe landing below. $psc snorts and grunts with effort and what sounds like a sense of accomplishment. It seems like $ps is not too confident with vertical flight yet.<</if>><<if $creature is "Voltaic Moth">>No need! $critter can fly, and is happy to do so. Once $ps sees that it seems safe to join you, $ps spreads $pp wings in a burst of color. $critter glides down and hovers beside you, $pp markings glowing brightly in the gloom. $psc has no trouble exploring vertical spaces, so long as $ps has room to move $pp wings.<</if>>
Together, you press onward. This must be the place that the gatekeeper spoke of: the ''Seedglade''. It is a sacred place where a falling star struck the earth long, long ago. The forest sprung up from the resulting crater.

You settle into the alcove for a quick break before retracing your steps. Before long, you see the light of the trapdoor ahead, still open as you left it. Beneath it, using a bit of the broken ladder rung for kindling, you build a small fire and set up places to sleep for both yourself and $critter. The smoke wafts up through the trapdoor and into the open structure of the ground floor, where it will disperse into the darkening night outside.

At the end of the long corkscrew path, the narrow hall opens into a large stone chamber littered with rusted, useless weapons. Amid the rust and decay, your lantern's flickering light catches on something glittering in the shadows.

You and $critter retrace your steps again, ascending the swirling incline of the dungeon until you are back at the trapdoor.
<<if $creature is "Voltaic Moth">>$critter flies up first, waiting for you on the ground floor.<</if>><<if $creature is "Mossbeast">>$critter hops into your arms; you shift $pp weight to one arm and carefully climb back up.<</if>><<if $creature is "Spice-newt">>$critter won't be able to use the ladder, and you can't carry $p2, but you can give $p2 a boost. $psc beats $pp wings as hard as $ps can and starts to rise off the ground. Halfway up, you give $p2 a push, and $ps flies through the trapdoor, landing on the floor above with a thump and a little grunt.<</if>>
From there, you coax $critter up the broken staircase. Your fingers are curled around the key in your pocket, the cold metal slowly warmed by your touch.
It fits the lock perfectly. The key turns, the lock clicks, and the door swings open.

Once you've exited the mud, you come to the clearing you spotted: huge and barren, no more than gray dirt and dried, tangled weeds trampled into it. The soil is cracked and powdery. The meadows in the distance are no longer green.
There are furrows in the earth here and there, as if a large animal clawed at the soil.

The bark is peeling off several of the trees, as though something with a tough hide has been rubbing its back against their trunks. Perhaps it was scratching an itch.

Interconnected habitats, storefronts, and administrative structures extend behind the plaza, where Menagerie patrons can purchase supplies, consult with professional handlers, and more. Murals depicting various habitats adorn the outer walls, ranging from lush grassy plains, to rippling bodies of water, to towering sand dunes.
Its entrance is grand, with a latticed iron gate that lifts during the day to admit visitors through a set of stained-glass double doors. As you stand outside, warm light begins to filter through the doors, scattering abstract patterns across the doorstep.

A crackle of static electricity passes between $pp antennae as $ps takes flight, hovering near the ceiling. All six legs attach to the dangling end of the rope, pulling it within your reach.<</if>>

The attic is lined with shelves, most of them empty, dusty, and draped with cobwebs. Whatever was once kept here is long gone — except for what looks like a chest buried under rubble from the fallen roof.

At the edge of the Seedglade is a steep cliff, beyond which stretches a wide field dotted with shrubs and trees. A four-legged shadow looms not far from bottom of the cliff. You drop into a crouch, concealing yourself in the underbrush in case it spots you, and <span class="cycle"><<cycle "$threat" autoselect>><<option "hold still">><<option "creep a little closer">><</cycle>></span>.
As the creature makes its way out of the forest, you can see it more clearly: beady eyes, cloven hooves, a shaggy coat matted with mud, and a massive set of tusks. Its head droops from the mere weight of them, moving like scythes through the tall grass as the creature continues wandering. It pauses now and then to grind its tough snout into the earth, shoveling up large mounds of dirt in pursuit of truffles and other treats.
