Crazy Eights Rules: What You Need to Know

It is estimated that there could be up to 10,000 types of card games.

However, while some of these games have been forgotten, others have stood the test of time. Crazy eights is one of those games. You can play it with your friends, family or just about anyone.

So, let's pay testament to this timeless game by looking into crazy eights rules.

What's the Object of the Game?

Unlike rummy or a game of solitaire, crazy eights is a "shedding game". This means the first person to shed or get rid of their cards is the winner.

Generally, the game is played with a standard 52-card deck, however, you can increase this to two decks if you have more than 5 people playing the game.

Card Values and Scoring

Now, as we already know, the first person to get rid of their cards wins. But, when they get rid of their cards they get points from all the cards being held by the rest of the participants.

Here's how you calculate your points:

  • An 8 of any suit = 50 points
  • A king, queen, jack or 10 = 10 points
  • An ace = 1 point
  • Other cards = face value

All of the points are added up, and the total value is the round winner's score.

Dealing the Cards

In a game of 2 people, 7 cards are dealt to each player. However, in our version of the game, you'll always start with 7 cards. The rest of the pack is placed face-down at the center, with the top card facing up.

General Crazy Eights Rules

Now, let's get into how the game is played. There are a few simple crazy eights rules to keep in mind.

  • Each player may discard any card that matches the top card, and subsequently, the last card played.
  • Matching cards are those with the same number or suit.
  • If you do not have a matching card, draw from the pack until you do.
  • All 8s can be played at any time, giving the player the freedom to call for any suit
  • After an 8 is played, the next player must play the suit called for by the player, or another 8

As the players continue to draw and discard, the first player to completely get rid of their cards is the winner. They collect their points from the value of the other players' in-hand cards.

Strategizing for Victory

If you're playing for points, the best thing you can do is to try and get rid of your high-value cards first. Of course, be strategic with your 8, and don't discard it too soon.

When playing on Coolmath Games, turn Action Cards on to unlock skip cards, draw 2 or 4 cards, and reverse cards. These can be a great tool to change the course of the game.

Practice Makes Perfect!

Don't let these crazy eights rules overwhelm you. They are simple to follow, and you'll soon get the hang of it with enough practice.

Also, feel free to make variations in the rules to maximize your enjoyment!
